Nintendo made the little plumber Mario into the most iconic face in video games. We all know him, and we’ve all played a Mario game before. But with nearly 30 years of classic games to feature the portly mascot I’ve decided that now is the time to discuss the top Mario games ever made. With over 100 titles to star the Italian maestro, I’ve instantly narrowed the results down to titles to have the Mario name in the title. That means that titles such as Smash Bros are out, whilst franchises such as Mario Kart, Mario Party and the various Mario Sports titles are okay. Without further rambling, I present to you part two; places 5-1 of my Top 10 Mario Games Countdown:
*If you’ve missed part one of our list it can be found here*
5/ Super Mario World
Regarded by many as Mario’s finest hour, Super Mario World graced the Super Nintendo and blew critics and fans alike away with tight platforming, incredible artistry, new inventive power-ups and of course the inclusion of the beloved Yoshi and Mario & Luigi quest to rescue Dinosaur Island from Bowser. Truly a phenomenal experience that gamers owe to themselves to experience.
4/ Super Mario Bros.
Not only was the orginal Super Mario Bros. a revelation, but it was single-handedly brought the gaming industry back from the brink of destruction after the great video game crash of the 80s. Pioneering many of the incredible gameplay that we nowadays simply take for granted Super Mario Bros. captured the imaginations of millions when it released on the Nintendo Entertainment System when it first released in 1985. Modern day gamers love revisiting the game for incredible speed-running feats, a testament to the quality of the Mario game that kicked it all off.3/ Super Mario Bros. 3
Without a doubt the finest 2D Mario experience, Super Mario Bros. 3 honed all features seen in previous games, added new power-ups and the ability to fly, whilst also allowing the fat plumber to slide down surfaces, build up crazy amounts of speed and pull off impressive new jumps. Co-operative multiplayer makes Super Mario Bros. 3 one of the best Mario games ever made and one that I cannot get enough of.2/ Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
The best non-3D Mario game doesn’t cast Mario as the star attraction! Sure, he may be a baby, and may demand a lot of attention, but the real star is the gorgeous Yoshi. Yoshi and friends find Mario one morning as he falls from the sky landing on a green Yoshi before trekking out to save baby Luigi from the clutches of Bowser. Spectacular levels such as “Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy” still blow me away even today, while the overall experience is one to behold, this is 2D Mario at its best!1/ Super Mario 64
There could only be one answer in a list of the best ever Mario games. Super Mario 64 is the absolute epitome of platformers let alone Mario games. A bold step in new directions, the introduction of 3D platforming and some of the most astounding level design I’ve ever seen are just a few of the highlights behind the greatest Mario game ever made. Collecting all 120 stars is a treat just as it is a challenge, making Super Mario 64 the greatest Mario game ever made.So that’s the countdown. No doubt it will cause controversy, but these are my choices for the best Mario games ever made. What are yours? Sound off in the comments below or via facebook/twitter.
